Getting the Most from Your Team (and Yourself): PERMA

What’s the key to happiness? If you asked Sigmund Freud, it’s the ability to avoid anxiety and not suffer. That's not very positive, and based on new research conducted by psychologist Dr. Martin Seligman, Freud has it all wrong. Seligman believes that happiness is readily achievable and the natural result of building one’s well-being by focusing on five areas.

  1. Positive Emotion: When we feel good, smile, laugh, share fun experiences and enjoy what we do and who we are with, our performance improves.
  2. Engagement: You can’t succeed if you don’t do anything. Being involved, absorbed, consumed and active generates focus and momentum.
  3. Relationships: We are social animals and flourish when we are connected, fall in love and bond and interact with others. Forming meaningful relationships with other human beings grows one's well-being, confidence and self-esteem.
  4. Meaning: Having a goal that is greater than one’s self drives a needed sense of grounding and fulfillment.
  5. Accomplishment: Achieving desired goals contributes to pride, contentment and a life well-lived.

When you and your team are happy, performance improves. PERMA helps increase happiness and performance. Seligman believes that managers should only be evaluated based on the ability to enhance all five PERMA points. Other metrics are not necessary. Creating a culture based on PERMA will differ for each person and business because desired outcomes will be different. If you are successful with the PERMA framework, the results will speak for themselves. Expect higher productivity, improved physical health and a greater degree of professional and personal satisfaction.
